People

Everyone who arrived through your content: what brought them, what they did in your product, the account they belong to, and where they stand on email.

People is the record of everyone your content brought in: how they arrived, what they did afterwards, which company they belong to, and whether you may email them.

It fills itself. Nothing here is a list you have to maintain.

Where records come from

SourceWhat it adds
The beaconAn identified conversion on your site — the signup form tells Ballad who it was.
identify()A returning visitor logging in, which backfills the touch their browser kept.
Your serverProduct events reported through the agent API, with the browser's touch if you pass it.
ImportA CSV of the customers you already had, matched to the visit that brought each one.

Without the beacon, People stays mostly empty — that's the one piece of wiring it depends on. See Measure what your content does.

The directory

The main list is everyone, newest activity first, with a stat strip above it: people, how many have email consent, new this week, active this week. Each is a filter.

Filter by segment, account, consent, how they arrived or how long ago, search by name or company, then export what's on screen as a CSV or change consent for everyone in the filter at once.

Open a person and you get their whole story: the post that first brought them and the last thing they read, every event with its properties, the accounts they belong to, where their consent stands and how it got there, and a button to ask them for a case study.

Accounts, segments and sequences

  • Accounts — the company, team or workspace a person belongs to, with its traits and its own activity. "Signed up, never published" reads per account rather than per email.
  • Segments — rules over all of that: what someone did and within how many days, the account they're in, how they arrived, days since signup, whether a launch reached them. You see the count and a sample before you save.
  • Sequences — the emails that go to a segment, drafted in your voice and sent one person at a time.
  • Activity — every identified event, grouped by day, filterable by event and account.

Segments and sequences are covered properly in Newsletter and lifecycle email.

Consent lives on the person, not on a list. A segment can select someone; if they haven't consented, they're skipped. Unsubscribes, bounces and spam complaints come back from your sending provider and withdraw it without you doing anything.

Ballad never emails your customers on your behalf outside the sequences and issues you approve — including the case-study ask, which it drafts and hands to you as a link to send yourself.
